Manila mayoralty elections 'dirtiest', 'most expensive'
MANILA, Philippines - The battle for the mayoralty seat between former President Joseph Estrada and incumbent Manila mayor Alfredo Lim was the "dirtiest", a progressive coalition of Makabayan said on Monday.
"We're expecting a chaotic battle,"Makabayan Manila chairperson Francisco Mariazeta said.
"We’ve witnessed one of the dirtiest and most expensive campaigns these past weeks, one tainted with violence and corrupting money politics," he added.
Incidents such as the arrest of Estrada’s running mate Isko Moreno, stone throwing and fist fights of the opposing camp’s supporters have been hogging the headlines in the past weeks.
"Estrada and Lim really lived up to their monikers. They really did run their campaign like kingpins" Mariazeta said.
Estrada is a former actor who played gang leader Asiong Salonga in a movie, while Lim earned the named "Dirty Harry" for his tough handling of criminals in the city.
Mariazeta also said that reports of vote buying have reached the group.
"Voters have reported about the rampant vote-buying happening on the ground. As it looks most, if not all, candidates running for local positions have engaged in it. Candidates have called various meetings where cash and grocery items were handed out. Some candidates have also hired so-called 'barangay workers'."
"Apparently this is a new scheme for vote-buying as those who were ‘hired’ do not know why exactly they were hired for. It is not surprising but frustrating that amid all the talk about good governance, candidates still engage in such shameless acts," he added.
The group earlier on spearheaded a campaign against vote-buying, popularizing the call for “My Vote Is Not For Sale.”
Group members have also organized a movement to guard against fraud.
